Have you ever thought of your mindset as a garden?

Imagine your mindset to be a garden. Ready to be planted.
Do you either plant seeds of growth and possibilities or weeds of limitation?
And which ones do you take care of more?
Which ones grow faster and become stronger?

I came across Carol Dweck‘s work on fixed and growth mindsets whilst living in South Africa. It was part of my coaching course. But also part of the kids’ school curriculum. It was truly eye-opening for me as a parent. But also in retrospect, reflecting on my own journey at school, at university, at work and now running my own coaching business.

In a nutshell:
A fixed mindset sees abilities as fixed, while a growth mindset believes in potential for change.

"I don't divide the world into the weak and the strong, or the successes and the failures... I divide the world into the learners and non learners."

- Benjamin Barber

Let me share the top 5 limiting mindset beliefs I come across in my coaching work. With family and friends. And with myself.

1) This is just how I am. Now you know how to handle me.
2) It's not my fault. He/She/They did not do their part.
3) This is life. There's nothing I can do about it.
4) I'm too old/young/inexperienced to take charge of my professional journey.
5) I don't have the (energy) resources or support to make significant changes.

How do these statements make you feel? Are you ready to flip the script?
Then let’s shift these statements to a mindset of possibilities 💫

1) I know that I have my flaws. But I’m willing to learn. I have the power to grow and evolve.
2) I made a mistake. This was a good opportunity to learn for the future.
3) I have the power to influence outcomes through my choices, actions, and responses.
4) My age/lack of experience is not a limitation. I have the ability to learn and grow. I’m taking charge of my life and create a future of possibilities.
5) (Energy) Resources and support can be helpful, but I refuse to let their absence hold me back. I am resourceful and capable of finding creative solutions to overcome obstacles and achieve what I want.

Just reflect for yourself for a minute:
Which plants are you taking care of?

Warmly, Viviane
